Gym Makeup Guide

Well, there are two kinds of people: those that wear makeup to the gym and those who don’t. I am beginning to be more like the first group because of countless hours of research and investigation put into finding out about why you should or should not wear makeup to the gym.

I found out a handful of answers that seemed to make me feel a multiple of different emotions (regretful being the most prominent emotion). Makeup at the gym is not a wise investment. There are multiple reasons why:

  1. The makeup can clog your pores when you sweat. When you sweat, your pores open up to produce the sweat. The makeup can now go into your pores and cause problems (like acne).
  2. Eye makeup can melt into your eyes while you sweat. That can irritate your eyes or even cause other eye problems (or even eye damage).
  3. Your skin needs to breathe while you exercise. Exercising influences your skin health (for the better). Exercising also flushes toxins from your body and increases blood flow (how neat is that?).

So, wearing makeup at the gym is not your best option, but if you absolutely have to wear makeup, you should make it your “cheat” day. You may also want to follow these guidelines for when you wear (and don’t wear) makeup to the gym.

First, I am going to put links to the outfit on the right because I absolutely love this outfit for working out.

Ok, now onto the makeup.

Before you even step foot in the gym, make sure to wash your face (every time). Make sure to wash your face with a non irritating, gentle face cleanser. One of my favorites is the Philosophy Purity cleanser ($31). This cleanser helps cleanse and hydrate the skin. You should wash your face before so that the dead skin doesn’t mix with the sweat and oils your face produces during the workout. That can sadly lead to clogged pores.

If you absolutely have to wear a foundation, keep it light with a BB or CC cream. I would recommend the Maybelline BB cream ($7.44) or the Bobbi Brown BB cream ($50). They are both amazing BB creams and work really well to even out your complexion and keep your skin in line.

If you don’t have too much acne, then skip the concealer. But if you need a light coverage, then choose a waterproof concealer. One of my favorite concealers is the Make Up For Ever Full Cover Concealer ($32).

Now onto the eye makeup. Make sure to wear a good waterproof mascara. There are so many options when it comes to waterproof mascara, but MissGlamorazzi (aka the amazing Ingrid) swears by Maybelline’s the Rocket mascara ($12). And if you can’t live without your eyeliner, you may also want to invest in a waterproof eyeliner. A new favorite waterproof eyeliner is the Benefit Push-Up liner ($24). For the lips and cheeks, keep it light. You don’t want a really heavy blush or lipstick. Try to keep it light with a lip and cheek tint. A great option is the Benefit PosieTint ($42). A great lower end option is the Sonia Kashuk Lip and Cheek Balm ($9.99). This leaves a dewy finish and is more creamy. But I have worn this at the gym and is does a great job. If you don’t like lip stains or don’t like that they dry out your lips, then top your lip stain with a lip balm. The Chapstick Cake Batter lip balm ($1) is both moisturizing and smells amazing.

After your workout, make sure to remove your makeup and refresh your face with some makeup wipes. The Burt’s Bees makeup wipes ($10) are some amazing wipes that help refresh and renew your skin in one clean sweep. Also make sure to wash your face with a gentle cleanser after you workout. Once your face is washed, apply a good face moisturizer that has SPF in it. One of my favorites is the Cetaphil Daily Facial Moisturizer with SPF 50+ ($14).

Another good thing to do throughout your workout is to use some blotting papers (or you could even use wipes) to help control the shine and oil that your skin is producing. The Clean and Clear Oil Absorbing sheets ($4.49) are the go to blotting sheets for a whole bunch of girls. They work really well and really help you stay away from shine.
